Higgins heard two shotgun blasts echo through the forest and he sucked in a breath. It was over.

He wanted to run, to see if his wife was okay, but he was sure she would be, and if he disturbed her, she would be furious with him.

‘Let’s give it a couple of minutes,’ he said to the two men who were with him.

Then they saw the lantern lighting her up as she came walking over the hill, Stern limping behind her.

‘I’m sorry,’ Candy said.

‘Don’t be. The bastard deserved it.’

‘No, I mean…’ She started sobbing.

‘He got away,’ Stern said, and that’s when Higgins saw the blood on Stern’s face.

‘I want to sit down,’ Candy said, her eyes looking glazed.

‘What the fuck happened?’ Higgins said and his bodyguard opened the door for her. She sat in the back of the Range Rover with the heat on.

‘He approached Mrs Higgins,’ Stern said, ‘and I thought she was going to let him have it, but he overpowered her. I tried to tackle him but he belted me with the gun. He kicked me and ran off. I went after him but he shot at me. I’m sorry, boss.’

‘Never mind that bastard. I’ll have a contract taken out on him. Get my wife home and we’ll get her cleaned up.’

‘Right away, sir.’

They all got in the cars and went back to the house.
